FLEETS PREP BEFORE COLON SURGERY

Since you are going to have colon (large bowel/intenstine) surgery, you need to follow a cleansing prep for two days before your surgery. This is a most important measure to reduce risk of infection.

You will need to stay on a clear liquid diet. This includes water, tea with sugar and honey, black coffee with or without sugar, Gatorade, and clear juices (cranberry, apple cranapple, etc. any juice you can see through) NO ORANGE JUICE OR MILK PRODUCTS. You may also have chicken or beef broth (no noodles or vegtables) and all the Jello you want.

You will need to take antibiotics IF THEY ARE CHECKED OFF BELOW; we will either have these prescriptions called in to your pharmacy or given them to you during your pre-op office visit. You will need to take an enema IF IT IS CHECKED OFF BELOW.

PLEASE FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS

Two days before your surgery

1. Start a clear liquid diet

2. Take Fleets Phosphosoda 1 1/2 oz. at 4:00 pm This is a laxative and should be taken with at least 4 oz. of clear liquid. (It will taste better if it is chilled.)

One day before your surgery

1. Stay on clear liquid diet; you may continue to take liquids after the Fleets Phosphosoda, but only until midnight.

2. Take Fleets Phosphosoda 1 1/2 oz. at 7:00-8:00 am with 4 oz. of clear liquid.

3. After midnight DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO EAT OR DRINK, NOT EVEN WATER.

___ Before bedtime the night before surgery, please give yourself a lukewarm tap water enema (regular bag) until the returns are clear.

___ Take Neomycin, one gram at 3:00 PM, 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM

___ Take Erythromycin Base, one gram at 3:00 PM, 4:00PM and 9:00 PM

If you normally take any heart or blood pressure medication in the morning, you must take them on the morning of surgery with a small sip of water.

If you are diabetic, especially if you take Insulin, you should notify your primary care physician about adjusting your medication dosages during the prep and the morning of surgery. DO NOT HESITATE TO CALL US WITH ANY QUESTIONS.
