The Montclair
Surgical Group was initially organized by Dr. Harrison Wesson who
had been first assistant to Drs. Will and Charlie Mayo of the world
famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He was the first Board Certified surgeon in the Montclair area and served as Governor of the American College of Surgeons. In the late sixties, he recruited Dr. Francis Wyckoff (recently retired) and, in the seventies, Dr.
Saj. Drs Robert
and Joseph Barbalinardo, Saj and Wyckoff incorporated the group
under the official name Montclair Surgical Associates in 1995. Dr.
Fresco was brought into the group in 1999 and
Dr. Strom in 2004. By encouraging and
attracting the brightest and the best surgeons to join them, this
group continues to enjoy the reputation of being a premier surgical
practice.
Dave
B. Swerdlow, MD, director of colorectal surgery at Mountainside
Hospital worked in close affiliation for many years with the doctors
of Montclair Surgical Associates. After his retirement, MSA has
assumed continuity of care for his patients.
Depth of Training
and Experience
Currently, Montclair
Surgical Associates employs five full-time surgeons. As is detailed
in the biography section of this site, all the surgeons have
excellent credentials, are Board Certified and are Fellows of the
American College of Surgeons. Additionally, members of the group have
acquired additional specialized training enabling them to provide expert care
in many areas. Two of the surgeons do colonoscopies. Three are
qualified to perform stereotactic and ultrasound-guided core biopsies of the
breast. All
do laparoscopic gallbladder, colon and hernia surgery. One has
introduced laparoscopic Nissen fundoplications (for GERD) to our
practice and another, laparoscopic bariatric surgery (for obesity).
Availability and
Continuity of Care
In the event of an
emergency, a patient's operation
is never delayed because of a particular surgeon's fixed schedule.
The partners are prepared to stand in for each other in the office
or in the operating room. The partners confer daily regarding each
patient's progress, and routinely round on each other's patient's,
whom they often know, having assisted at the patient's
operation.
Medical Education
and Hospital Governance
The doctors of
Montclair Surgical Associates continue a tradition of serving their
hospital and community: Two of the current partners have been
elected by their peers to serve as President of the Medical Staff at
Mountainside Hospital, Montclair, NJ; one is Chairman of the Medical
Education Committee and Director of the Department of Surgery; another served 6 years as Governor of the
American College of Surgeons representing 1200 surgeons in New
Jersey; yet another was an officer of the Essex County Medical
Society; two are Assistant Clinical Professors of Surgery at UMDNJ-New
Jersey Medical School, Newark, NJ.
