Joseph
Barbalinardo, MD FACS
Dr. Joe (as many of his
patients call him) was born and raised in Bergen County, New Jersey and
attended Bergen Catholic High School. He earned his BS in Biology at
Villanova University in 1974 and his MD at the Universidad Autonoma in
Guadalajara in 1978. His fluent Spanish has been a great asset in an
Essex County practice. He then completed a rotating internship at St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark, NJ, with training in Surgery, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Ob-Gyn. His five year Surgical Residency followed at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School,
Newark, NJ under the guidance of Dr. Benjamin. F. Rush.
Dr Barbalinardo was distinguished by his
appointment as one of two Administrative Chief Residents in Surgery
during his last year of training and was voted "Best Teacher"
among all surgical residents for his last two years. He has maintained
his faculty appointment at New Jersey Medical School since completing
his Residency and is currently Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery.
Dr Barbarlinardo has
pursued further training in many areas of interest since completing his
Residency and has incorporated these techniques into practice. These
include Basic and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery and Minimally-Invasive
Breast Surgery techniques such as Stereotactic and Ultrasound-guided
Procedures and Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy. He has been the Chairman of
the Medical Education Committee at Mountainside Hospital, Montclair, NJ
for the last six years. This committee coordinates all of the Continuing
Medical Education (CME) activities for the entire Medical Staff. Dr. Joe is currently the Director of the Department of Surgery at Mountainside Hospital.
Dr Barbalinardo is Board
Certified and Re-Certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a
Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He is an active
member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the Society of
Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.
Dr Joe spends as much of
his "spare" time as possible with his family, including his
wife, Laurene (nurse and Mom) and his two teenage daughters, Alexis
("Lexi") and Taylor ("TJ"). He is a dedicated
(Montclair High School) Field Hockey Dad, rarely missing a game. An avid guitarist since the seventh grade, Dr Barbalinardo
enjoys all types of music, especially classic rock and blues. His is
"Mr Fixit" at home and also performs major surgery in his
garage, currently rebuilding an old Jeep.
